The Right To Aquire Scheme is very similar to the Right To Buy Scheme but applies to those who are not council tenants but tenants of a social landlord or housing association. You wont receive as much of a discount compared to a right to buy scheme because the discount is capped at £16,000.Again you will have to pay this discount back if you sell within 5 years and the previous Social Landlord/Housing Association must get the first offer for the current market value before it can be sold on the open market if you sell the property in under 10 years.

In both instances you will need to apply to your landlord for an application form.

'HomeBuy' Schemes are alternative options designed to meet the needs of low income individuals (£60,000 or less per household) or council/housing association tenants who are unable to afford there own homes. The eligibality criteria they state is:

  • - a first time home buyer
  • - a previous home owner who due to unforeseen circumstances can no longer afford to buy without assistance(perhaps because you have broken up with your partner)
  • - housing association resident or tenant under the council
  • - a key public sector worker, like a nurse or teacher
  • - if you have a long term disability
